Nagpur’s Startup Ecosystem in 2026: How Innovation, Policy & Startup Fest Are Powering Growth

Nagpur, historically known as the Orange City and the geographical Zero Mile of India, is steadily carving out a reputation as an emerging hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the past decade, a variety of organisations — from civic bodies to educational institutions and grassroots networks — have played a crucial role in nurturing the startup ecosystem here. What was once a city primarily known for its cultural and administrative significance is now witnessing the rise of technology ventures, youth-led entrepreneurial initiatives, and celebration of innovation at scale.

India’s Biggest Startup Platform – Nagpur Startup Fest

One of the most significant milestones in Nagpur’s entrepreneurial journey has been the Nagpur Startup Fest, organised jointly by the Indian Council for Technical Research and Development (ICTRD) and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Conceived as a visionary platform to promote and celebrate the city’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, the fest has brought government policymakers, investors, founders, students, and domain experts under one roof.

The festival has been described as India’s biggest startup event in its editions — with multiple years of execution — aiming to provide creators and innovators a stage to showcase ideas, engage with stakeholders, and receive mentorship and funding opportunities. Dignitaries including Union ministers and senior civic officials have inaugurated past editions, amplifying its importance and signalling Nagpur’s potential to the broader entrepreneurial community.

Through its networking zones, startup expo areas, panel discussions, and demo sessions, the Nagpur Startup Fest has contributed to an ecosystem where startups no longer operate in isolation but find visibility, collaboration, and recognition within and beyond the city.

Celebrating Innovation – Mayor Innovation Award and Beyond

In addition to the Startup Fest, the Mayor Innovation Award — a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation — recognises and celebrates innovators across sectors. This award reflects an important civic commitment: to appreciate creative problem- solvers and highlight innovation as a driver of local development.

While dedicated infrastructure and policies for startups are still evolving, platforms like these awards generate public awareness and motivate young talent to think beyond conventional job pathways.

Academic and Institutional Support

Nagpur’s educational institutions have also been active participants in building the city’s entrepreneurial fabric. Premier institutes such as Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM Nagpur) and Indian Institute of Information Technology Nagpur (IIIT Nagpur) regularly host events, workshops, and tech summits that engage startup founders, investors, and students.

Alongside formal institutes, grassroots initiatives like local founders meetups and tech/design coworking meetups, have emerged as important communal spaces for networking and collaboration among early-stage entrepreneurs.

Emerging Startups and Recognition on Larger Platforms

Nagpur’s startup ecosystem is beginning to demonstrate results on larger stages as well. Local ventures are increasingly getting noticed outside the city, such as startups being selected among top innovators in statewide events like Maharashtra Startup Week 2025, reinforcing Nagpur’s entrepreneurial potential.

These achievements highlight that while the ecosystem is young, it has momentum and the achievements of early innovators are inspiring others to take the plunge.

The Role of Government and Future Directions

Despite these positive developments, there remains a strong case for more proactive, diversified government support that goes beyond traditional structures. Startup growth in Nagpur currently relies heavily on collaborations through established academic institutions and periodic events. While these are essential, the ecosystem also needs dedicated public institutions, independent innovation bodies, and ongoing support mechanisms that operate continuously rather than periodically.

Key areas where further action would help include:

Dedicated incubation and seed-funding bodies focused specifically on Nagpur startups, rather than
exclusively through existing campuses or traditional education institutions.
Policy frameworks and incentives tailored for early-stage ventures, including tax breaks, regulatory
assistance, and greater investor matchmaking support.
Permanent co-working and maker spaces, incubators, and R&D labs accessible to innovators across
sectors, not just a select few academic partners.
Ecosystem partnerships with industry leaders, global accelerators, and international innovation
networks to bring global practices closer to local founders.

Such measures, driven by a combination of government foresight and private collaboration, would accelerate Nagpur’s path toward a vibrant and self-sustaining innovation economy.

Nagpur’s startup ecosystem is no longer nascent, it is emerging. With flagship events like the Nagpur Startup Fest, innovation celebrations like the Mayor Innovation Award, institutional engagement from local colleges and universities, and a growing community of young innovators, the city is evolving from a regional administrative centre into a meaningful startup hub.

To fully realise its potential, the ecosystem needs structured support that goes beyond one- off events, harnesses collective public and private efforts, and empowers its youth not just to begin ventures but to scale them successfully on national and global stages.
